Meridian Herald presents its 13th
annual camp meeting service, Sunday, September 26, 2010 at Marietta First UMC in
their outdoor pavilion. There is no admission charge and everyone is welcome.
In these times of financial and social turmoil, this service, offering spiritual
traditions and music from our mothers and fathers, invites our return to the
tried and true, and our renewed faith in God’s providence.
On this foundation, may we proceed with confidence through the challenges
ahead.
Sam Matthews will preach.
Senior Pastor of Marietta First, Dr. Matthews is a Georgia native who
speaks truly of God’s call to the land and people of this region. For more
information -

The evening will open with 30 minutes of
music, leading into the service of prayer, preaching, and singing. Music led by
the Marietta Adult Choir and the Meridian Chorale and soloists will include
time-honored gospel hymns, camp meeting spirituals and chorale arrangements of
classic hymns by Steven Darsey. Renowned
Atlanta pianist Jim Gibson will play.
In addition to great singing and
preaching, attendees will enjoy the camp meeting setting at the outdoor pavilion
at First UMC. Located just off the historic Marietta Square Marietta FUMC has
held services since 1835. After the service, attendees will enjoy warm
fellowship and refreshments on the grounds. Chairs will be available, but there
will also be space for personal lawn chairs and blankets.
In case of rain, the service will take place in the sanctuary.
Camp meetings began in the 19th century
south, when farmers, after the crops were laid by, would go "camping” with their
families and friends for a week or more. The days and evenings were filled with
fiery preaching and impassioned singing of Gospel songs.
Marietta FUMC is located on the corner
of the 120 loop (Powder Springs Street) and Whitlock Ave.

These tried and true offerings promise spiritual benefit to all. We hope you will join us for the service and for ice cream and fellowship afterward on the grounds. The spiritual traditions and music of our forebears, through Meridian Herald’s services and programs, invite our renewed faith and confidence.
